REFORMATION REVISITED: Classic Lutheran Pastoral Care for the 21st Century

In this 500th Anniversary year of the Reformation, DOXOLOGY is offering pastors two Spotlight on Ministry Conferences specifically reflecting on our Lutheran heritage as it pertains to the contemporary care of souls. The concern of Luther and his colleagues was not limited to doctrinal fidelity, but to the faithful proclamation and reception of the Word of God for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. In other words, their concern was pastoral in nature. DOXOLOGY is pleased to offer two unique overnight focused seminars on the cure of souls presented by some of the foremost scholars on Lutheran history and the practice of pastoral care.  Registration for these Spotlight Conferences is limited to pastors only.

What is this conference about?

“When Scripture says God is speaking, it means a word of reality [a word that makes things happen], an action … ‘he spoke, and it happened’” (Luther’s Works, 12:32-33).  Martin Luther regarded God’s speaking as the foundation of reality, including the reality of the forgiveness of sins and the new Christian life lived in the footsteps of Christ.  On the foundation of this understanding of human existence and the world around us, Luther educated his students to be ministers of God’s Word for their people, in their preaching, teaching, evangelizing the baptized who showed little interest in the faith, and pastoral care of the repentant.  Can Luther’s understanding of the living and active Word of God, that springs from the pages of Scripture in its various oral, written, and sacrament forms, shape our preaching, teaching, reaching, and caring today?  How do we cope with the nature of the gospel as a weak and foolish Word from God when the realities of sin and evil seem to overpower the reality God sets before us in the Bible?  How do we help others trust the Word of the Lord as it finds and addresses them in daily life?  Explore Luther’s use of Scripture in his classroom instruction, his preaching from the pulpit, and his personal devotion as a model for us today.
