REFORMATION REVISITED: Classic Lutheran Pastoral Care for the 21st Century
In this 500th Anniversary year of the Reformation, DOXOLOGY is offering pastors two Spotlight on Ministry Conferences specifically reflecting on our Lutheran heritage as it pertains to the contemporary care of souls. The concern of Luther and his colleagues was not limited to doctrinal fidelity, but to the faithful proclamation and reception of the Word of God for the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation. In other words, their concern was pastoral in nature. DOXOLOGY is pleased to offer two unique overnight focused seminars on the cure of souls presented by some of the foremost scholars on Lutheran history and the practice of pastoral care. Registration for these Spotlight Conferences is limited to pastors only.
What is this conference about?
C.F.W. Walther (1811-1887) and Wilhelm Loehe (1808-1872), both products of the confessional revival of the 19th century, authored pastoral theologies reflective of the vigorous renewal which was taking place both in Lutheran theology and church life. Both men draw deeply from the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions while also utilizing pastoral theologies produced in the era of 17th Lutheran Orthodoxy and Pietism. Walther specifically wrote from the context of an immigrant church in North America, while Loehe is reflective of the conditions of the Bavarian territorial church. This presentation will locate both men and their respective pastoral theologies in the context of the history of pastoral care while examining their unique contributions to their understanding of the three key elements: (1) the nature of the pastoral office; (2) the character and life of the pastor; and (3) the work of the pastor as caretaker of souls. Finally, we will ask what might we learn for contemporary pastoral practice as confessional Lutherans.
