Winger examines the two words of the phrase, saints and communion, from the New Testament. Saints are those God has made holy in Baptism, not those who have achieved holy lives; Paul’s “you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified” describes one gift rather than stages. Communion is a sharing in something held in common, and what Christians hold in common begins with the flesh Christ took in the Incarnation and gives in the Lord’s Supper. The holiness and the fellowship of the saints are both received from Christ through Word and Sacrament.
