Rev. Dr. Thomas M. Winger

The phrase “communion of saints” rarely appears in the Pastoral Epistles, so Winger works from the vocabulary that is present. He grounds it in the one Mediator, the man Christ Jesus (1 Timothy 2:5), in the church as the household of God, and in the office of the ministry, which he compares to a treasure carried in clay jars. He reads the letters as a church order written through Timothy and Titus to the whole congregation, ordered by the lawful use of the law and the mercy shown to Paul as the chief of sinners, and he takes the verse on childbearing as honor given to woman, since the Savior was born of one.
